Landscape In the City
Light, Timing, Composition
I've passed this tree hundreds of times over the last several years. Each time, I think to myself that this tree might make for a nice photograph. I passed it again on the way home. While at the house I kept thinking about that tree which is only a few blocks away. Finally, I decided to go make a photo of it. I drive to the location, park in a parking lot, and walk about a quarter mile across the parking lot and a field. I study the tree and the composition I want, then lay down on my stomach in the grass. About twenty to 30 yards behind camera is a main road. About fifty to sixty yards to camera left is a main intersection. I proceed to make a few images of the tree.
I've been following Daniel Milnor for several years now. It started on YouTube and now on his Shifter.Media site. Wether he knows it or not he's been a mentor of mine during that time. Regardless about the fact that I have been doing photography for nearly 30 years now, I still think it's a wise idea to have a mentor. With easy access to online outlets and the fact that anyone can start a YouTube channel, and label themselves a teacher, it's wise to know who to allow to influence you. But that's another topic for another day.
Dan says photography is about light, timing, and composition. I could not agree more. I knew from where this tree was located I would have to capture this image in the late afternoon, just before sunset. I knew I was going to have to photograph this tree on a mostly sunny day. When I was standing up there were more trees off in the distance that would have cluttered the background, so I had to lay down to get this angle / composition. Notice that there is leaf in the foreground and the fact that there are no leaves on the tree. That tells a story. If I would have photographed this tree in the summer, there would possibly be a different story to be told about this tree. Photography: Light. Timing. Composition. Go tell stories with your photography!
