Photography Lessons and Workshops

Experience

I started photography during 1995 - 1996, which was my senior year of high school. I studied traditional film photography and learned how to process film and print in the darkroom. During college I continued my education in photography and graduated in 2001 with an Associate Degree in Fine Art Photography and Digital Imaging. In 2002 I started my journey with digital photography. I continued my education by taking workshops led by editorial photographer Zack Arias, portrait photographer Sue Bryce, as well as a workshop hosted by Popular Photography magazine. Since then, I have hosted several workshops of my own. I also teach one on one.

Service

With my experience, I can help you learn anything from the basic functions of your camera such as shooting modes, focusing, white balance, and more. Basic aspects of photography such as shutter speeds, apertures, ISO and how they relate are foundational building blocks that you will need to learn to help your confidence while making photographs. In my photography workshops and lessons you will also learn about exposure, composition, natural / ambient light, flash and off camera flash, depth of field, as well as how the camera and lens work for a better understanding about photography. Lastly, if you would like to learn how to set up a home studio or how to shoot clients on location, I can go over those aspects as well.

If you are running, or plan to run a photography business, knowing your camera, and knowing how to get the end result that you desire, all while making it seem effortless is important. When you are in front of your client you do not want to be fumbling around with camera or flash settings. You want to be confident in what you are doing and have your attention focused solely on making your client feel at ease. Get out of the "fix in photoshop" mindset by getting each image as close as possible to how you want it in camera. If desired, I can also go over my workflow in post production with Lightroom and Photoshop. I am confident that I can help you learn how to shoot with confidence! Please note that not every aspect of photography can be covered in 1.5 hours. Each lesson will be tailored to your specific needs.

Testimonials

"Scott was my first photography teacher. With him, I started to understand the exposure triangle for the first time - like really know it with hands on the camera. It's different than understanding the principals in your head. Scott was a great hands on teacher, giving positive and supportive feedback on photos we snapped. He also found a great model and location to shoot at. Overall, very nicely done, Scott. I would take an advanced workshop from him."

My first experience with off camera flash was a small group lesson with Scott Smith. He has so much knowledge in this area and is gracious in sharing with others. He knows how to explain things in a way that is easy to understand and I always felt as ease around him. I can hardly stand to do a session without my OFC now!! It gives my photos that extra "something" that I was missing. I am eternally grateful to him for his help and if you are interested in learning off camera flash or expanding your photography knowledge, I highly recommend him!

Sincerely,

Investment

I've researched other photographers and other forms of art that offer lessons. I feel that I have priced my rates at a very reasonable price point considering the experience I have. I feel that 1.5 hours is long enough to gain an understanding of what one already knows and to work from there to reach our goal.

Individual photography lessons are 1.5 hours long and are $65. Each additional hour is $35 per hour if purchased at the time of initial booking.

Workshops are 4 hours in length and are $155 per person with a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 6 participants.

Lessons and workshops must be paid in full upon booking.
